CLAUDIUS DU CHESNE LONDINI BURR WALNUT MONTH DURATION LONGCASE CLOCK

A rare George I period burr walnut longcase clock with month duration movement, hour strike and chiming on 6 bells at the quarters. There is also a penny moon and lunar datework within the arch.

The case is veneered with burr walnut of beautiful mellow colour and patination. The pull-forward arched top hood is flanked by turned pillars with brass capitals and bases and has a walnut veneered caddy top.

The 12 inch arched dial has an applied chapter ring with twin cherubs holding a crown and sceptre spandrels. The centre is finely matted with an applied seconds ring and an aperture to view the day of the month. The blued steel hands are finely pierced and the maker’s signature – Claudius Du Chesne Londini - is engraved on the chapter ring. Within the arch there is an inset revolving penny moon and an engraved Lunar calendar set amidst the finest quality foliate engraving which is a hallmark of Du Chesne’s work.

The six finned pillar month duration movement has rack strike with the hours sounded on a bell and the quarters on six bells. As one would expect from a maker of Du Chesne’s stature, the movement is of the highest quality with fine wheelwork and large plates. There is also a strike/non-strike lever at II on the dial plate.
