ELLIS HOULGRAVE. A superb quality George III period 8-day quarter chiming brass dial longcase clock.
A superb quality George III period 8-day quarter chiming brass dial longcase clock by this London clockmaker.
The mahogany case has fine flame veneers, satinwood stringing and tulipwood crossbanding. The beautiful trunk has fan and paterae inlays and reeded quarter columns with Doric brass capitals and bases. Similar motifs are repeated in the base which also has a central oval of flame mahogany and reeded quarter columns. The arched top hood has unusual satinwood inlays to simulate fluting and oval fan shaped bosses along with free standing fluted columns and well-cast Corinthian capitals.
The fine quality 8-day movement strikes the hours on one bell and chimes the quarters off the music barrel with 8 hammers on 8 bells.
The overall brass dial has subsidiary seconds, inset datework and flower and foliate corner spandrels. The maker's name Ellis Houlgrave LONDON is finely engraved on a disc in the arch which is set between the two small dials for chime/not chime and the two tunes St Michael's and Canterbury.
