Late 17th CENTURY BURR YEWWOOD CHEST

Origin
English
Date
circa 1790 - 1795

A classic provincial burr yewwood chest of drawers of the William and Mary period in a very original state of preservation.

This well proportioned chest consists of three short and three long well graduated drawers and stands on (replaced) bun feet. The smaller central drawer is most unusual.   The top has a book matched veneered centre section with very intricate burr yew and a wide section of outer crossbanding with mitred corners.  The overall decorative effect of the above is quite stunning.

All the drawer fronts are nicely bowed and have very tight burr yew veneers and outer crossbanding. The brass escutcheons and brass drop handles appear to be original.

The colour, patination and figuring of the burr yewwood veneers over the drawer fronts, the sides and top are quite exceptional.

Height: 35 in (89 cm)

Width: 37 in (94 cm)

Depth: 22 ¾ in (57.75 cm)
