William & Mary Period Burr Yew, Walnut and Oak Cabinet on Stand of Rare Small Size

Origin
English
Date
circa 1690 - 1695

A fine William and Mary period burr yew, walnut and oak cabinet on stand, consisting of an upper section with eight short and four long drawers with a cross grain yew wood cornice moulding above. There is a broken pedimented central door flanked by pilasters with a central inlaid starburst veneered onto a solid elm frame.

The original burr yew and walnut stand has a beautifully shaped apron with an early cockbeaded edge set below a long central drawer with an engraved brass central escutcheon. It is supported on five cup-and-cover baluster legs which terminate in turned bun feet.

Date: circa 1690 - 1695

Height: 56 ½ in (143.5 cm)

Width: 31 in (79 cm)

Depth: 17 ½ in (44.5 cm)

* This is an extremely rare piece of furniture given its design, small size and unusual configuration of veneers. The burr yew-wood and walnut crossbanded veneers and solid Double D oak mouldings  are a glorious colour. It has a high degree of originality, including all the drawer linings, the brass knob handles, all five legs of the stand and the curved front stretcher.
